Ligonier golf outing will benefit Derry Township humane society

Golfers on Friday will have an opportunity to help local pets in need of homes by trying their luck on the greens at the Ligonier Country Club.

The club will play host that day to a golf outing benefiting Derry Township-based Action For Animals Humane Society.

The cost of $125 per golfer, or $500 for a foursome, includes an 11 a.m. lunch, 18 holes of golf, with beer and soft drinks on the course, and a buffet dinner.

Skill prizes will be awarded for each hole of the course. The event also will feature door prizes, auction items and a drawing for a television donated by Esposito TV Sales of Latrobe. Those who donate a bag of dry Purina dog or cat food will be entered in an additional drawing.

Registration is at 10 a.m., with a shotgun start at noon.

Since they began in 2010, Action for Animals golf outings have raised more than $180,000 for the animals the organization cares for at its shelter.

“We hope to add significant dollars to that figure this year,” said Dean Miller, an Action for Animals volunteer board member who is chairing the outing. “With the support of everyone who participated in last year’s effort, we were able to raise funds for shelter operations that cost $2,000 per day.”

Last year, he said, the organization took in 659 animals, completed adoptions for 539 dogs, cats and bunnies and reunited 17 stray dogs and cats with their guardians.

Action for Animals also offers low-cost spay and neuter services to low-income pet owners. It presents programs for schoolchildren, youth groups and civic groups.
