Latrobe Parks & Recreation dance celebrates father-daughter bond
February is the month when Valentine’s Day encourages us to reach out to those we love, so it’s the perfect time to celebrate the bond between daughters and the father figures in their lives.
Latrobe-GLSD Parks & Recreation will do just that with its inaugural Daddy-Daughter Dance, set for Feb. 22. Dubbed the “Winter Wonderland Ball,” it will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Greater Latrobe Senior High School Center for Student Creativity. The event will feature music provided by a disc jockey, refreshments, a sundae bar and games for girls ages 3-12 who can dress up and be escorted by a father, grandfather, uncle or other male role model.
So many want to attend, the dance had to be moved from the smaller Center for Student Creativity at Latrobe Elementary School, Parks & Recreation Director Craig Shevchik said.
More than 100 have registered for the event.
“We’ve had an excellent response, a lot of positive feedback,” Shevchik said. “More people signed up than we thought would.
“Some people have called, and they’re grateful we’re doing it because they have relatives who do it in their neck of the woods.”
Established father-daughter dances in other Westmoreland County communities provided examples for organizers of the new Latrobe event, Shevchik noted.
The North Huntingdon Department of Parks & Recreation will hold its dance on Feb. 15. The Penn Trafford Area Recreation Commission dance is set for April 24.
At the Latrobe-GLSD dance, “Elsa” will be on hand to pose with attendees for photos snapped by digital media students from Eastern Westmoreland Career and Technology Center. Each girl attending also will receive a gift to take home.
“It’s a nice chance to make some memories,” said Shevchik, who has a 12-year-old daughter. “These days, everybody is busy working or at extra-curricular activities or on the phone. It’s nice to be able to spend some one-on-one time.”
The cost to attend is $30 per couple and $10 for each additional child.
