Joinery Hotel Pittsburgh opens with locally curated amenities
The new Joinery Hotel Pittsburgh is opening its doors, with amenities designed to invite guests to “stay like they own the place” — and to feel at home in Pittsburgh itself.
The 185-room boutique hotel, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, is in a historic Gothic Revival-style building at 453 Boulevard of the Allies that formerly housed Distrikt Hotel Pittsburgh.
A grand opening event is scheduled for Thursday.
The hotel is partnering with local businesses to provide a welcoming experience, said general manager Donato Coluccio.
Features include an “offering table” at check-in, with local Voodoo Brewery beer, wine from Pittsburgh Winery, coffee by local roaster Nicholas Coffee, spirits and snacks. Along with board games, the lobby provides visitors with a library curated by Amazing Books & Records, records collected by Get Hip Records and rental bikes courtesy of Thick Bikes.
The lobby also boasts a contemporary art collection showcasing local makers, curated by NINE dot ARTS. The interior pays homage to Pittsburgh’s industrial past and high-tech present.
“Joinery Hotel Pittsburgh sets itself apart from competitors through our ethos of honoring the city’s working-class history and distinct culture through analog offerings and design details with a modern industrial aesthetic,” Coluccio said. “Beyond being a compact and cozy respite for today’s curious traveler, we also aim to act as a neighborhood hub to welcome in Yinzers as well.”
Local residents are invited to partake of the lobby’s amenities, he said.
The hotel also boasts a 10th-floor terrace with iconic city views, a fitness center, event space, rooms with workspaces and limited dining options.
Plans for the Joinery announced in May included a partnership with the elevated American eatery concept, T&E Diner, to replace the seafood and chophouse restaurant called or, The Whale that operated in the Distrikt Hotel.
“In terms of dining options, we parted ways with T&E Diner but are working to find a new restaurant partner as soon as possible,” Coluccio said. “In the meantime, a select menu will be available via the offering table for breakfast, lunch and dinner, sourced locally whenever possible.”
The hotel also will offer regular programming in partnership with local small businesses to emphasize “the importance of community and the depths of what makes the quirky city of Pittsburgh tick.” Initial offerings include:
• Cheers-to-Beer Sip Tour and Stay, a collaboration with the Pittsburgh Brewers Guild, with a custom tour for hotel guests at 10 local breweries including Southern Tier Brewery Pittsburgh, Allegheny City Brewing and Cinderlands Warehouse.
• Steel City Artist-In-Residency Series, exhibiting works by local artists and creators. The series will debut with works by multidisciplinary sculptor Blaine Siegel, using Polaroid photography to create an abstract work that will act as a window into the heart of Joinery Hotel. The final piece will be on public display from September through November.
Following that, the hotel will feature abstract artist Deanna Mance for a live, interactive, on-site painting series. Mance also was commissioned for a permanent mural in the lobby titled, “XXX.”
Curio Collection by Hilton is a “soft brand” that allows its member hotels in the United States and around the world to retain individual branding while being supported by the Hilton Worldwide portfolio, Coluccio said.
“Each Curio Collection by Hilton hotel is part of the destination it calls home — authentically embodying the distinct culture and spirit of the community in which they reside,” he said.
Grand opening room rates at the Joinery start at $169 per night, subject to change. For information, visit joineryhotel.com.
