Today is Earth Day — an annual event since 1970.

Since 1970, Earth Day is celebrated each April 22, beginning with a protest against the impact of industrial development, according to earthday.org

Global pollution leading to developmental delays in children and a decline in biodiversity from heavy use of pesticides and other pollutants led the call to action, the organization notes.

That July, the Environmental Protection Agency was created, leading to environmental laws including the Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act.

Political action and civic participation now combine with marches, petitions, tree plantings and town and road cleanups scheduled each year.

Efforts have expanded to education people about the health and other risks associated with the use and disposal of plastics, including pollution of oceans, water and wildlife.

This year’s theme is “Protect Our Species.”
