West Newton benefit dares conquering the 'Youghness Monster'
It seems appropriate that a fundraiser for the West Newton Volunteer Fire Department involves water.
Lots and lots of water.
Those who love to launch themselves — and their crafts — on the water can sign on to do just that during the May 4 Youghness Monster 25 Paddlesports Race.
The 25-mile downriver race — class 1 and 2 water, depending on river levels — launches from the Connellsville boat ramp and finishes at the fire department and Bloom Brew in West Newton.
According to its website, the race is a kayak, canoe and stand-up paddleboard benefit to help the fire department pay for equipment and cover operating expenses.
Classes will include unlimited, sea kayak, tandem, recreational and fishing kayaks.
According to organizers, the U.S. (Army) Corp of Engineers controls the water level at the Youghiogheny Dam.
Main race sponsors are Performance Kayak, Inc. and Stellar Kayaks & Surfskis.
Last year’s race attracted 74 paddlers from 14 states and raised $2,424 for the fire department, organizers say.
Awards will be given in several classes and overall speed.
Registration closes on May 2.
