The Greensburg YMCA is offering fitness programs for all ages in August.
Friday, Aug. 5 is the deadline to register kids ages 2-4 in a program intended to them moving and having fun in a friendly environment.
The Tots Variety Sports program at the Greensburg YMCA is running Aug. 8-31 in the Y gymnasium on Maple Avenue.
Kids will learn fundamental skills in a different sport each week including kickball, volleyball and basketball. There also will be time for “classic” toddler games such as Simon Says and Duck, Duck, Goose.
“Our Tots programs have long been a staple at the YMCA, and the Variety program offers coaching and fun in a handful of different sports,” said Scott Brown, director of sports and wellness at the Y. “It will be a great environment for learning and fun.”
Parents can choose to have their child attend either on Mondays or Wednesdays. Session run from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. Space is limited to about 20 kids per session.
The cost is $65 for Y members and $70 for non-members. Visit greensburgymca.org to register online.
Exercise options
The Y also offers popular group exercise classes for various levels and fitness goals.
Several classes are available following the Les Mills program, developed by a four-time Olympian in New Zealand.
• In August, “Bodypump” classes are offered at various times on Tuesdays and Thursdays through Sundays. Instructors coach participants through workouts using light to moderate weights with lots of repetitions.
According to Y officials, each class can accommodate about 15 participants but averages between eight and 10 people working out together.
• “Bodyflow” classes are available Sundays through Thursdays. This yoga-based program involves bending, stretching and breathing control. It embraces elements of tai chi and pilates.
• The “GRIT Strength” workout series involves high-intensity interval training meant to improve strength and build muscle. Those sessions are offered Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
• Silver and Fit exercise programs, scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays, are ideal for older adults.
Silver and Fit Experience classes are designed to increase flexibility, joint stability, balance, coordination, agility, reaction time, muscular strength, power and cardiovascular endurance.
Silver and Fit Yoga classes are appropriate for any fitness level. A series of poses is geared towards improving flexibility, range of motion, strength and posture.
The exercise programs are free for Y members and cost $5 per class for non-members.
