Alphabet Trail and Tales, touted as Western Pennsylvania’s largest read aloud event, returns to Blue Slide Playground in Pittsburgh’s Frick Park this Saturday.

“We are super excited to be back in Frick Park this year for this annual early and elementary literacy day of fun,” said Kathryn Vargas, director of CitiParks.

The event — which serves not only Pittsburghers, but also residents of Allegheny County and surrounding areas — is returning after a two-year hiatus. This marks the 21st year for this event.

The event attracts about 5,000 children and families each year, city officials said. Readers and storytellers bring hand-painted story sets to life and urge children and families to participate in the story.

This year’s selection of children’s books includes the Carnegie Library’s 2022 PA One Book selection “Saturday” by Caldecott award-winning illustrator and author Oge Mora.

CitiParks and the EQT Children’s Theater will present “Llama Llama Red Pajama” by acclaimed children’s author and illustrator Anna Dewdney.

The event, slated to run from 10 a.m. till 1 p.m., will also feature music, a puppet parade, face painting and other children’s activities. The event is free.
