Shopping, seminars, Santa and more are in the news this weekend in Pittsburgh.

Thanksgiving tradition

Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will present “Thanksgiving Tradition: Strauss Family Favorites” at 8 p.m. Friday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Heinz Hall, 600 Penn Ave. in the Cultural District.

Former PSO Concertmaster Noah Bendix-Balgley returns to perform his own Klezmer Concerto, composed in Pittsburgh and inspired by his Jewish roots. Principal Cellist Anne Martindale-Williams will join Bendix-Balgley on Vivaldi’s Concerto for Violin and Cello.

The program also features Strauss waltzes and polkas and Mozart’s Overture to “The Marriage of Figaro.”

Tickets are $20-$98 at 412-392-4900 or pittsburghsymphony.org.

Seasons greetings

The first of four Seasons Greetings Saturdays is planned for 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the National Aviary, 700 Arch St. in Pittsburgh’s North Side.

Children of all ages can meet Santa, sing along to some very bird-y holiday carols, settle in for story time featuring a special feathered friend, drop a letter to Santa in the Aviary’s North Pole-approved mailbox and and take home a festive craft. Activities are included in the price of admission.

Seasons Greetings Saturdays will continue Dec. 3, 10 and 17. For more information and tickets, visit aviary.org.

‘Suite life’

The 15th annual “Suite Life” concert, Kelly Strayhorn Theater’s annual celebration of its namesakes and Pittsburgh entertainment legends, jazz composer Billy Strayhorn and performer Gene Kelly, is set for 8 p.m. Saturday in the theater at 5941 Penn Ave., East Liberty.

A VIP reception is planned for 6-7:30 p.m. at nearby Duolingo headquarters, 5900 Penn Ave.

With stage direction by Monteze Freeland and musical direction by Theron Brown, the evening will feature musical and dance performances, including works by Strayhorn and imagery inspired by Kelly.

Concert tickets are $35-$65 and reception tickets are $100-$200, available at kelly-strayhorn.org.

Crafts and drafts

An outdoor Crafts and Drafts Holiday Market is planned for noon-4 p.m. Sunday at East End Brewing, 147 Julius St. in Pittsburgh’s East End.

About 20 local artists, makers and vintage sellers will offer wares including apparel, jewelry and accessories, artworks in various mediums, floral arrangements, cards, calendars, stickers, used vinyl records and more. Pizza, beer, cider, sodas and seltzers will be available from the brewery.

Event co-sponsor is Alternate Histories Studio. For information, visit Crafts and Drafts Holiday Market on Facebook.

Empowering women

The Women of Color Expo 2022 Pittsburgh will begin with a meet-and-greet at 11 a.m. Saturday in the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel & Suites Downtown Pittsburgh, 1 Bigelow Square.

The program begins at noon with a ribbon-cutting featuring Michelle Gainey, wife of Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey, and will include educational seminars, workshops, beauty treatments, hair demonstrations, fashions and comedy.

The expo aims to identify and address the critical needs of women of color related to their career goals, mental and physical health and personal achievements.

Tickets are $20-$30 at womenofcolorexpos.com.
