Kentucky Fried Chicken released it new Chicken & Donuts dishes this week, and fans nationwide can thank Pittsburgh eaters for the sweet and savory offerings.

Last September, KFCs in Pittsburgh and Norfolk, Va., were the test markets for the new dishes.

The fried chicken giant tested its Fried Chicken & Donuts at a dozen sites in Allegheny County and four in Westmoreland. Customers could chose between a doughnut sandwich for $5.99 or a combo for $7.99 and a basket meal for $5.49. Guests could also add a doughnut to any meal for $1.

“It’s not the kind of food that you’d get and eat driving down the turnpike,” diner Leo Wozniak said last fall at a KFC in Monroeville.

Another diner, Mark Bowman, agreed, noting the doughnut chicken sandwich required a little “smooshing.”

“It’s Pittsburgh,” Bowman said. “It’s not supposed to be nice when you eat.”

Kentucky Fried Chicken is now offering these items nationwide through March 16.

The Chicken & Donuts basket meals feature chicken on the bone or chicken tenders paired with one doughnut. Chicken & Donuts sandwiches have a chicken filet set between two glazed donuts. And if you just want a doughnut, you can order one on its own.
