Dyeing hard-boiled eggs is a time-honored Easter tradition. But, when it comes to eating eggs for the spring holiday, the chocolate ones take center stage.
In a recent CandyStore.com survey of more than 23,000 of its customers, two different variations on chocolate eggs — marketed by the same company — topped the respective lists of worst and best Easter candies.
Cadbury Creme Eggs, featuring a chocolate candy shell and a gooey filling that looks like an egg white and yolk, were chosen as the No. 1 worst Easter candy by survey respondents.
The chocolate treat drew negative comments about the difficulty of eating it without finding a sticky mess on one’s hands. Others found the treat’s visual and tactile resemblance to a raw egg less than appealing.
On the other hand, the best Easter candy title went to Cadbury Mini Eggs, which consist of a milk chocolate center inside a pastel “shell.”
Delish.com notes the popular mini eggs also can be had in dark chocolate, white chocolate and chocolate crunch.
From another perspective, the National Confectioners Association lists chocolate eggs and bunnies, together, as Americans’ favorite Easter candy - based on a 55% response among 1,500 people who completed a January 2018 online questionnaire.
Other egg-shaped treats were mentioned by the CandyStore.com survey respondents.
The “best” list includes: familiar Reese’s peanut butter eggs, at No. 3 and “Robins Egg” versions of Whoppers malted milk balls, at No. 5.
In the sixth best spot are Kinder Joy Eggs. Recently introduced to the U.S. candy market, the eggs open to reveal a toy prize in one half and cocoa wafer bites surrounded by creme pudding in the other half.
Lesser-ranked “best” selections include foil-wrapped chocolate eggs, in eighth place, and plastic eggs filled with Skittles fruit candies, in ninth place.
Jordan almonds, which are covered in a hard candy coating, earned a No. 9 ranking on the “worst” list. Survey respondents faulted them for lacking chocolate and expressed concern about breaking a tooth on the coating.
Two Easter basket staples — chocolate bunnies and jelly beans — drew mixed responses.
Hollow chocolate bunnies received a No. 2 ranking on the “best” list while solid chocolate bunnies drew a fifth-place slot on the “worst” list. Haters argue that a solid bunny is too much of a good thing, presenting the chocolate lover with the overwhelming challenge of trying to finish it all at once.
Generic jelly beans are the No. 6 worst Easter candy, according to the survey, attracting criticism for poor texture and taste. “Gourmet” beans, usually smaller but more flavorful, earned a No. 7 “best” ranking.
Peeps sugar-coated marshmallow treats may be an iconic Easter brand. But survey respondents placed them at No. 3 on the list of worst candy for the holiday.
