The popular gastropub Fuel and Fuddle in Oakland announced Tuesday that it will close this month, citing increased rent and other issues.
The restaurant at 212 Oakland St. in Pittsburgh is a favorite with college students and located close to the University of Pittsburgh’s campus. It has been open for about two decades.
Owner Brandon Smith said on Twitter that Fuel and Fuddle’s lease is up and the restaurant’s last day will be May 26, assuming there is enough staff.
“Hey guys, unfortunately today I’m announcing that Fuel is closing up shop,” wrote Smith from the restaurant’s Twitter account. “Our lease is up, and the rent, and just about everything else, has become too much for us. I just wanted to thank everyone for all the years of laughs and hugs and tips and shots.”

Fuel and Fuddle is the third Oakland staple to close since the start of the pandemic. The Original Hot Dog Shop closed in 2020 and was sold to new owners who have since replaced it with a taco shop. The Oakland Mad Mex closed this February, citing staffing challenges.
The closure came as a surprise to many. Fuel and Fuddle had taken advantage of loosening restaurant regulations during the pandemic, and expanded its outdoor space when the city closed down a section of Oakland Street to cars.
People took to social media to express sadness at the announced closure, including Pitt alumni.
Pitt community losing another OG, and students losing another authentic local spot. Thanks for my first IPA, my first officially documented 100 beers, introduction to jerk spiced chicken, the location of my first participation in a Jewish holiday and dozens of great times. https://t.co/ykOW2kPzeR— Nick Hewlett (@pghnick) May 10, 2023
