1 in 4 Pennsylvanians admit to drinking more when it’s cold outside, says study
Apparently, as the temperature drops, corks pop.
A new study has found that one in four adults in Pennsylvania admit to drinking more when it’s cold outside.
Conducted and published by American Addiction Centers, roughly 25% of adults in the Keystone State indulge in booze during the chilly weather.
Another 36% state they’d much rather have a drink on a cold winter’s night than a hot summer’s day.
The study also found the top five drinks Pennsylvanians are knocking back during these times are:
- Beer
- Wine
- Whiskey
- Irish cream liqueur
- Hot toddies
Pennsylvania wasn’t the state with the largest winter drinking population percentile in the country. That honor would go to states such as West Virginia and North Dakota, who were listed at 50% and 40%, respectively.
Those states which are the most well-behaved in terms of drinking in colder climates would be Florida (10%); Kentucky (10%); Nebraska (10%); South Dakota (10%); and, oddly enough, Alaska (11%).
However, the study states that 12% of Americans aren’t drinking just to drink, but believe alcohol will help them get warmer. Another 10% even believe that booze protects from hypothermia, which is very much not true.
And the top alcoholic beverage that Americans are snuggling up with as they watch the snow fall outside their window? That would be beer.
So go ahead — enjoy those toddies and those stouts. There’s nothing like a relaxing drink under a thick blanket that can send those winter blues on their way.
