A sign outside of the Twitter office building is shown in San Francisco on July 9.

Twitter wants to tailor users’ experiences and give them more control with a new feature.

The service is now giving tweeters in the U.S. and Japan the ability to hide replies on their tweets.

The action is part of an effort Twitter is making to stop the spread of hate and vitriol online, according to The Verge.

Already launched in Canada, the program has led to positive trends, Twitter says. According to its research, Twitter says people mostly hid replies they thought were irrelevant, abusive or unintelligible. Of those people who had their tweets hidden, 27% said they would reconsider how they interact with others in the future.

The hidden replies can be still be viewed by clicking a box on the tweet that says “view replies the tweet author has hidden.”
