A BJ's Wholesale Club has been proposed for South Fayette's Newbury Market

Here is a rendering of a proposed BJ’s Wholesale Club at South Fayette’s Newbury Market.

A BJ’s Wholesale Club may be coming to South Fayette.

The township planning commissioners unanimously voted Thursday night to accept a land development and subdivision application plan for the business proposed at the Newbury Market site.

The commissioners declined to discuss the plan, moving talks and possible site plan approval to next month’s meeting.

“This is a long-awaited piece of the Newbury development,” township Engineer Andy Blenko said. “They’ve submitted a lot of drawings now … I believe we have everything we need in order to accept this.”

Latrobe-based Thistle Financial Group is its developer. The engineering firm working on the project is KU Resources.

A third-party engineering firm would review the plans because KU Resources is the consulting firm for the planning commission. It is unclear what other firm would be involved.

Solicitor Bob Garvin said no further action was needed Thursday, and the review process will go one step at a time.

“We’ll get our heads together on the use of the property and proper approvals and make a recommendation,” Garvin said.

BJ’s Wholesale Club is a membership-only warehouse club chain similar to Sam’s Club or Costco.

It sells electronics, furniture, appliances, sporting goods, food and other items.

The company is based in Westborough, Mass. There are about 220 stores throughout the eastern part of the nation with Pennsylvania locations in Philadelphia, Allentown, Reading and other communities. More information about the wholesale club is available at bjs.com.

The land development application and site drawings were posted online with the planning commission’s agenda.

Plans include a nearly 100,000-square-foot building, at least 400 parking spaces and a few gas pumps on an estimated 10-acre site.

Newbury project manager Eric Newhouse is excited about the possible tenant.

“I’m confident they will be a welcomed addition to the South Fayette community and the broader Pittsburgh region,” Newhouse said.

It’s unclear when construction could begin.

Planning commission meetings are scheduled for 7 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of the month.

The meetings have taken place via Zoom in recent months because of the covid-19 pandemic.
