The multi-award-winning musical, "Hamilton," returns to the Benedum Center for a PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh engagement Feb. 22-March 13.

The hit musical “Hamilton” returns to Pittsburgh for performances Feb. 22 through March 13 at the Benedum Center in the downtown Cultural District.

Prospective audience members who haven’t purchased tickets yet would be well advised to do so soon, said Marc Fleming, vice president of marketing, communications and Broadway programming for the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.

”It’s very well sold already, but there are still tickets available,” he said. “By the time it gets here, it will very likely be sold out.”

Telling the story of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton through the lens of modern musical styles including hip-hop, R&B and jazz, the fast-paced, high-energy “Hamilton” had a sold-out run in Pittsburgh in January 2019.

“It has been the most popular and the fastest-selling performance in the PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh series,” Fleming said.

Created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also played the starring role on Broadway, “Hamilton” currently holds the record for most Tony Award nominations with 16, resulting in 11 wins in 2016. It also won numerous other awards, including Drama League, Grammy and NAACP Image awards, along with the Pulitzer Prize for drama and special Kennedy Center honors.

“We’re very excited to bring it back to Pittsburgh,” Fleming said. “Folks who were not able to see it in person here could see it on Disney Plus during the pandemic, but there’s nothing like seeing a musical in three dimensions.”

Great crossover event

With book, music, and lyrics by Miranda, “Hamilton” features direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler and musical supervision and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire. The musical is based on Ron Chernow’s acclaimed 2004 biography, “Alexander Hamilton.”

The Pittsburgh engagement is presented by the Trust, producer Jeffrey Seller and Broadway Across America.

“When Lin-Manuel Miranda first came out with ‘Hamilton,’ people wondered how a hip-hop, rap musical about the Founding Fathers could be popular,” Fleming said. “It turned out to be a great crossover event for both people interested in musical theater and people interested in popular culture.”

It’s also great for overall Trust programming and the entire Cultural District, he said.

“When the curtain comes down for the final time, 70,000 people will have seen it,” Fleming said. “That’s the equivalent of a crowd coming in for a Steelers game.”

Research shows that about 25% of audiences for blockbuster productions like “Hamilton” will be first-time ticket-buyers, he said. It also shows that a large number of them will return within five years for another event.

“We know that ‘Hamilton,’ along with other phenomenal events, will attract hundreds of thousands of guests to fill restaurants, add jobs and bring an increased vibrancy to Downtown,” Fleming said.

There is a maximum purchase limit of nine tickets per account for the musical’s Pittsburgh performances. Price range is $49-$179, with a select number of premium seats available from $299 for all performances.

Attendees will need to provide proof of vaccination and photo identification, along with a valid ticket. Those who are not vaccinated will need to show proof of negative covid-19 test. Masks are required inside all Trust venues.
