Tool coming to PPG Paints Arena with 'Fear Inoculum' tour

Tool, a band that Pitchfork says was “(f)orged in the the mad-at-my-dad fires of ’90s post-grunge and nu-metal,” has announced a six-week fall tour coming on the heels of the Aug. 30 release of “Fear Inoculum,” the band’s first studio album since “10,000 Days” in 2006.

The tour includes a Nov. 8 date at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, with opening act Killing Joke.

The digital version of “Fear Inoculum” comprises 10 tracks, while the physical version has seven.

The Pitchfork review says the album is “the sound of four people making long, complicated songs together. There are hardly any overdubs, production flourishes, or additional instrumentation, just (lead singer Maynard James) Keenan’s delicate howl, bassist Justin Chancellor, guitarist Adam Jones, and one of the most lauded drummers in modern rock, Danny Carey. The stripped-down purity of sound here means that everything hangs on the songs themselves, all of which run over 10 minutes, save for a few ambient interludes and a palate-cleansing, nearly five-minute Carey drum solo backed by a giant custom synth. You get what is expected of an album over a decade in the making: a more mature, sometimes exciting collection that feels both overworked and undercooked.”

Formed in Los Angeles in 1990, Tool developed a heavy metal sound influenced by progressive, psychedelic and art rock.

The band has won three Grammy Awards, two for Best Metal Performance (for 1997’s “Ænema” and 2001’s “Schism”) and for Best Recording Package in 2006 for “10,000 Days.”

Tool will play the Aftershock Festival in Sacramento, Calif., on Oct. 13, then head to Denver for an Oct. 15 date. The tour will wrap up Nov. 25 in Washington, D.C.
