Pittsburgh Camerata prepares for both live and virtual performances
The Pittsburgh Camerata’s upcoming season will include four programs, the first of which will be available exclusively for online viewing.
The following three programs will be presented live in front of an audience, if possible, or as virtual performances to be viewed online, or as both.
“During this time of pandemic, the Pittsburgh Camerata will continue singing,” said Managing Director Gail Luley.
The opening program, “Christmas With the Camerata,” will be recorded in advance and released for viewing at 3 p.m Dec. 13.
Whether concerts will be open for in-person attendance will depend on health directives in place at the time. If audiences are allowed, the concerts still will be offered on a virtual platform for those who are not comfortable attending in person.
Rounding out the season are these concerts:
• “Northern Lights: Music from Scandinavia and the Baltics” — 3 p.m. Feb. 21
• “Camerata Quartet Concert” – 3 p.m. April 25. This will be a concert of music sung by women, composed by women with text written by women. Four members of the Camerata will sing together and solo and offer instrumental pieces.
• “Invitation to Summer” — 7 p.m. June 9.
Any in-person performances will take place at Shadyside Presbyterian Church, 5121 Westminster Place, Pittsburgh.
Each concert will include recently composed choral music, along with historical music that has stood the test of time. The Camerata’s repertoire spans choral literature from the late Middle Ages to music from the 20th and 21st centuries.
Artistic Director Mark Anderson said that he, the Board of Directors and Camerata singers believe their mission to present imaginative and inspiring choral programs is important now more than ever.
“The Pittsburgh Camerata believes that choral music is a powerful way to connect all of us to what is finest in each of us,” Luley added.
Founded in 1974, the Camerata performs primarily a cappella, specializing in the entire choral repertory with a unique focus on Renaissance/Baroque and 20th-21st century works.
Videos of individual pieces recorded in past concerts can be viewed on the Camerata YouTube channel.
