Veteran rocker Paul Stanley has a new album with his Soul Station project, but fans waiting for new Kiss material may be out of luck.
Making the rounds in interviews this week, the “Starchild” said the band’s debut album, “Now and Then,” is inspired by and a tribute to classic soul music.
It contains several covers including The Spinners’ “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love;” The Temptations’ “Just My Imagination;” and Smokey Robinson’s “The Tracks of My Tears.”
And the five original songs also have a Motown feel.
The AP review of the album said that some of Stanley’s originals would have had a decent chance of being AM radio hits in the ’70s, including “Save Me” and “Whenever You’re Ready.”
Stanley started Soul Station, an 11-member group that includes Kiss drummer Eric Singer, in 2015 as a performing band. The band went into the studio and recorded the album, which is out this Friday.
He told USA Today that the music “wasn’t about mimicry, it was about getting the gist, the intent and the emotion behind the song. I wanted Soul Station to be rooted in the past, but not live there.”
He continued that he wanted to “capture something that I loved in those classic songs without me sitting down and trying to consciously (recreate them).”
In the interview he also talks about Kiss’ “Destroyer” album, which turned 45 this year, and how he felt when the album’s producer Bob Ezrin, gave Stanley’s song “God of Thunder” to Gene Simmons to sing.
“I was devastated. I was broken,” he said, but it was a “character-defining song for Gene and he did it so great.”
Asked about new material with Kiss, Stanley said directly, “I don’t really see a reason for it, to be quite honest.”
But that doesn’t mean there won’t be shows.
Stanley told Rolling Stone that he does see Kiss resuming their End of the Road tour, although the complications of scheduling and touring during the covid pandemic will still be an issue.
He also wants Soul Station to get out and play shows.
“I’m hopeful that on a smaller scale it’ll be possible for Soul Station to go out. You have to see this band live to really get it,” he told Rolling Stone.
Kiss’ official site has dates starting in the summer in Europe and then coming to the U.S. later. There’s a date listed for Aug. 26 at The Pavilion at Star Lake in Burgettstown.
