Shirley McMarlin

Free tickets are available for the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra’s season finale concert on May 5 in Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh.

Doors will open one hour prior to the 7:30 p.m. performance.

Conducted by PYSO music director Earl Lee, the program will feature:

• Keiko Abe’s “Prism Rhapsody,” with soloist Sophie Lauver on five-octave marimba. A senior at Mt. Lebanon High School, Lauver was the winner of Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra’s 2019 Concerto Competition.

• “March of the Toreadors” from Georges Bizet’s opera, “Carmen,” conducted by Mitchell Dubin, winner of PYSO’s Conducting Competition. Dubin is a junior at the Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts High School (CAPA) and has played bassoon with PYSO for two years.

• Combined movements from Suites 1 and 2 of Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet “Romeo and Juliet,” to include “Montagues and Capulets,” “The Child Juliet,” “Minuet,” “Masks,” “Romeo and Juliet” and “Death of Tybalt.”

• PYSO alumni will join current orchestra members for a side-by-side performance of Arturo Márquez’s “Danzón No. 2,” one of the most popularly performed pieces of Mexican contemporary classical music since its premiere in 1994.

Open seating is available in all sections of Heinz Hall, except the stage boxes and front rows of the Grand Tier.
