Former teen idol crooners share The Palace Theatre stage

Mary Pickels

Actor and singer Frankie Avalon and Western Pennsylvania native Lou Christie will bring decades of performing talent to The Palace Theatre in Greensburg for an upcoming show.

The two will take the stage for a Sept. 15 concert presented by Latshaw Productions.

Avalon, 78, a Philadelphia native, is known for setting teenage girls’ hearts aflutter with songs like “Venus,” “Teacher’s Pet” and “Beauty School Dropout.”

The year 1959 brought him six top 40 hit songs.

His film credits include 30 movies, but he likely is best known for partnering with the late Annette Funicello in a series of “Beach Party” films.

Christie’s chart-topping, multi-million-selling career as a songwriter, recording artist and performer started in his rural hometown near Pittsburgh. His first million-selling song, “The Gypsy Cried,” vaulted him into national teen idol status.

Christie, 76, gained fame with his falsetto in follow-ups including “Two Faces Have I” and “Lightning Strikes.“
