AP Eric Clapton performs during his “70th Birthday Celebration” concert on May 1, 2015, at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Guitar legend Eric Clapton will play PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh on Sept. 16, as part of a five-city, seven-date tour.

Guitarist Jimmy Vaughn will join Clapton for the tour, which will feature a band including notable musicians Doyle Bramhall II, Paul Carrack, Nathan East, Sonny Emory and Chris Stainton, with Sharon White and Katie Kissoon on backing vocals.

Clapton last performed in the United States in fall 2021.

The brief tour launches Sept. 8 in Columbus, Ohio, then heads to Detroit for a single show and Chicago for two nights before stopping in Pittsburgh. It will wrap up with shows Sept. 18 and 19 at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Tickets go on sale 10 a.m. June 10 on ericclapton.com.

For the Pittsburgh date, Clapton will be competing for fans against another rock legend — Elton John is set to perform in PNC Park on the same night.

Widely considered one of the best guitarists of all time, Clapton ranked second in Rolling Stone’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” and fourth in Gibson’s “Top 50 Guitarists of All Time.”

Clapton, 77, joined The Yardbirds in 1963, then played with John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, Cream and Blind Faith. In addition to his solo career, he also has played with Delaney and Bonnie and the super-group Derek and the Dominoes, with whom he recorded the signature song “Layla.”

His other hits include the Bob Marley cover “I Shot the Sheriff,” “Wonderful Tonight” and “Tears in Heaven.”

Clapton also has recorded with The Beatles, Roger Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Dr. John, Leon Russell, Billy Preston, Ringo Starr, Dave Mason and many others.

A multiple Grammy Award winner, Clapton is the only three-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: as a solo artist and as a member of both the Yardbirds and Cream. He also is a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
