Classic, contemporary highlight free philharmonic concert
Music from Schubert to John Williams will be included in the Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra Academy of Music’s free summer philharmonic concert.
The program will be performed at 8 p.m. July 16 in Seton Hill University’s Performing Arts Center, 100 Harrison Ave., Greensburg.
Music director Morrie Brand conducts the concert that begins with standard classical music selections followed by music from the movies. The evening includes Shostakovich’s “Festive Overture,” the first movement of Schubert’s Symphony No. 9, Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” and concludes with John Williams’ music from “Superman.”
The summer philharmonic is an educational offering of the orchestra’s Academy of Music.
Six rehearsals precede the concert, planners say.
Brand founded the group, now in its seventh summer, to provide a quality orchestra playing experience to area music teachers and other adults, along with string members and alumni of the Westmoreland Youth Symphony Program.
