You Are Here offering Lean On Me cane making workshop
You Are Here in Jeannette is offering an upcoming cane-making workshop in which participants can decorate a cane for a friend or family member, or for their own use.
Jen Costello, a founder of the art space with Mary Briggs, also is founder of the Lean On Me Project, which provides artist-designed canes at no cost for people dealing with diminished mobility.
The $15 fee for the 2 p.m. Nov. 16 class covers basic cane and decorating materials.
Should a participant decide to design a cane and donate it to the Lean On Me Project, the registration fee will be waived, Costello says.
Only 10 seats will be available for the workshop at the center, located at 406 Clay Ave. Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Since beginning the project several years ago, Costello has worked with other volunteers, including high school students, to increase the inventory of canes, available at the gallery.
“This is the first time we’ve opened it up to the general public. People were asking how they could get in here to make them,” she says.
Costello and Briggs will teach the course.
“We will show them how to paint and embellish,” she says.
With the holiday season approaching, the canes can make personalized gifts, Costello says.
“There is a personal investment when you are making them for someone you know. I think it should be fun. I’m kind of interested to see what everyone else is going to make,” she adds.
