The Westmoreland plans virtual African American cooking session
The Westmoreland Museum of American Art will delve into the rich and varied history of African American cooking during a livestream event at 7 p.m. Aug. 8
The virtual discussion and cooking demonstration will feature author Toni Tipton-Martin and chef Aziza Young.
Tipton-Martin will discuss the evolution of African American cooking and her book, “Jubilee: Recipes from Two Centuries of African American Cooking.”
According to her website, Tipton-Martin shares “real-life stories of this country’s invisible African American cooks through her rare book collection, cooking classes, talks and presentations. Her hope is that by championing the professional skills and kitchen wisdom of generations of black cooks, these iconic figures will be recognized as culinary role models from whom everyone can learn.”
Young, a contestant in Season 16 of Fox Network’s “Hell’s Kitchen,” will demonstrate how to make a recipe from Tipton-Martin’s book. Her experience includes a stint as an executive chef at Mangia Qui, an upscale Italian restaurant in Harrisburg.
Signed copies of Tipton-Martin’s book will be made available for purchase during the free session.
Registration deadline is Aug. 6.
The link to access the session will be included on the receipt/confirmation page during the registration process, and the link will be included in an emailed receipt. On Aug. 7, all registrants also will receive another email with the link.
