Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art plans a free family fun day at its Ligonier site.

The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Ligonier Valley will again host a free Family Fun Day at the One Boucher Lane site.

The program is set from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 7.

According to site coordinator Kristin Miller, activities for all ages will include silk marbling, storytelling, necklace making, acrylic pouring, rock painting and more.

“We started this program about three years ago. I really wanted an opportunity to make it like an arts festival. … It’s a way of giving back to our community; we make the art activities very interactive,” Miller says.

Artists include storytellers Phyllis and Tom Baker and Bob Zabrowski, who will demonstrate pottery making. Weather permitting, many of the activities will take place on the museum lawn.

“They can sell their work, but they need to demonstrate and allow participation (in their art),” Miller says of the artists.

Children also will be able to participate in a variety of games.

The program is for all ages.

“Last year we had a lovely couple in their 80s who danced to our music,” she says.

A variety of snack foods will be available for sale, along with tickets for a basket raffle.

On view in the Elizabeth Shaw Gamble Gallery will be “A Celebration of Texture and Pattern: Hooked Rugs and Historic Coverlets.”

The exhibition features approximately 40 pieces, including antique coverlets from the National Museum of the American Coverlet and corresponding rugs designed by local artist Barbara Carroll.
