Despite a year in which more people likely saw its exhibits online than in-person, Boxheart Gallery in Pittsburgh’s Bloomfield neighborhood is forging ahead with plans for its 20th anniversary in the new year.

“We think that artists are extremely important, especially during these changing times,” said gallery owner Nicole Capozzi.

Following the spring pandemic business closures, Boxheart reopened to the public this past June, offering scheduled in-person visits and also virtual 3-D tours that art lovers could enjoy from home.

Capozzi said that for her and Boxheart’s custom framer and art handler Josh Hogan, it was important to be able to consistently provide their artists with a way to exhibit and sell their work.

“We hope that our role as a small arts business can be a continuation of our efforts to promote creativity, demonstrate openness, share culture and communicate the power of different voices,” Capozzi said.

The gallery’s 20th anniversary exhibit, which opens Jan. 20 and runs through Feb. 19, 2021, will span Boxheart’s history.

“It’s a group of artists who are showing with us during 2021, but also a lot of artists who’ve exhibited with us over the past two decades,” Capozzi said.

Artists whose work is slated to appear include Karen Antonelli, Mary Becker, Deirdre Murphy, Andrew Ooi, Seth Clark, Josh Hogan, Irina Koukhanova, Brianna Martray, Daria Sandburg, Tiffany Simmons, Renee Tay and others.

After the 20th anniversary gallery runs its course, artists Tony Cavalline and Travis Winters will have exhibits running March 3 through April 2.
