Big band dance set at West Overton's Big Barn
West Overton Museums will host a World War II Victory Ball dinner dance to honor local veterans and raise funds for new education programs.
The event will be held in the East Huntingdon Township facility’s Big Barn from 5:30-8 p.m. May 25.
Tickets for the Memorial Day weekend event are $40 and include dinner and two-hour open bar. Tickets for military veterans are $30, and admission is free for World War II veterans (with registration), says Aaron Hollis, the site’s director of education.
Ticket sales will help to create more interactive programming and bring more students to West Overton, Hollis says.
The Wally Gingers Orchestra, billed as Western Pennsylvania’s only surviving original big band, will perform popular war-era tunes. Get ready to cut a rug to tunes from Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, Frank Sinatra, Doris Day and The Ames Brothers.
Those attending are encouraged to dress in 1940’s garb.
Participants can pose for photos with Rosie the Riveter — portrayed by Alyssa Bruno — or with a World War II Jeep. In addition, the World War II exhibit will be open in the Distillery Museum during the event.
A local honor guard and the band will conduct a ceremony in remembrance of lost veterans.
