We leave September and welcome October this weekend. Here are some ways to spend it.
Hazelwood Green
Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre presents “Open Air” performances at Hazelwood Green on Lytle Street in Hazelwood at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The ballet will present a mixed repertory performance featuring classical and contemporary works.
The free outdoor festival Friday through Sunday includes food, art, classes and children’s activities. The event is in partnership with the August Wilson African American Cultural Center and Hazelwood Local.
Saturday is August Wilson Community Day and will include activities from local museums and arts organizations.
Hours are 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Puppet event
There is a Puppetmobile workshop Saturday and Sunday in the Cultural District’s Backyard space at Eighth Avenue and Penn Avenue, Downtown. The public is invited to help paint and build slip-covers that turn cars into giant puppets with Brighton Heights resident and artist Cheryl Capezzuti of Puppets for Pittsburgh, a community-interactive public art practice.
The vehicles will be transformed into a rhinoceros, dragon, snail and unicorn. The finished products will be used for the First Night Pittsburgh parade on Dec. 31.
All ages are welcome.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Cemetery walk
As part of Prime Stage Theatre’s 27th season, the company will host an outdoor theatrical program at the Homewood Cemetery on Dallas Avenue in Point Breeze.
Professional actors will bring the historic stories of Pittsburgh legends to life. They will wear period costumes to portray the characters at the cemetery, which opened in 1878.
Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes. Each tour is approximately one hour. Tickets are $20. Advanced online ticket sales only. Limited tickets available.

Silent film festival
On Friday, the inaugural Pittsburgh Silent Film Festival will coincide with the third annual Silent Movie Day, a worldwide celebration of silent film occurring each year on Sept. 29, a project co-founded in 2021 by Pittsburgh Silent Film Festival director Chad Hunter. The Harris Theater, Downtown will show “The Johnstown Flood” at 7 p.m.
Hosted by the Pittsburgh Silent Film Society, the festival continues at 7:45 p.m. Saturday when Row House Cinema in Lawrenceville will show “Wings.” On Sunday, the Frick Pittsburgh in Point Breeze will host “Silent Shakespeare: Four Early Short Films” with live musical accompaniment by Tom Roberts at 2 p.m. Guests will also have access to the “From Stage to Page: 400 Years of Shakespeare in Print” exhibit.
The Harris Theater will also host the 100th anniversary screening of “ A Woman of Paris” on Sunday.
Pittsburgh is the birthplace of the silent movie theater and many of its stars.
Tickets are $15-$20.

Party on the Mount
The Mount Washington Community Development Corporation will host the fifth annual Party on the Mount from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday. The event will be held on Grandview Avenue overlooking the Pittsburgh skyline from Shiloh to Bertha Streets.
There will be food vendors and activities. Proceeds will benefit the Washington Heights Ecumenical Food Bank.
Admission is free.
