With some of Marvel’s greatest heroes heading into the sunset, it’s nice to see a hero return.
Jean-Luc Picard is back in the CBS All Access show “Star Trek: Picard,” and the first look at it debuted Thursday.
Patrick Stewart (OK, Sir Patrick to be formal), will reprise his iconic role as the former captain of the USS Enterprise for seven seasons on “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and several films.
However, as this teaser clearly establishes, things aren’t so sweet in retirement for Picard.
The teaser sets up Picard having set up his life on his family’s Chateau Picard vineyard in France. A voiceover reveals he has left Starfleet after an “unimaginable” event.
“What did that cost you? Your faith? Your faith in us? Your faith in yourself? Tell us why did you leave Starfleet admiral.”
Yikes. The show is set 18 years after the events of “Star Trek: Nemesis.”
“‘Picard’ is a very contemplative show,” executive producer Alex Kurtzman told EW. “It will find a balance between the speed of ‘Discovery’ and the nature of what ‘Next Gen’ was, but I believe it will have its own rhythm. Without revealing too much about it, people have so many questions about Picard and what happened to him, and the idea we get to take time to answer those questions in the wake of the many, many things he’s had to deal with in ‘Next Gen’ is really exciting. ‘More grounded’ is not the right way to put it, because season 2 of ‘Discovery’ is also grounded. It will feel more … real-world? If that’s the right way to put it.”
The show also stars Alison Pill, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera and Harry Treadaway.
As of yet, there is no release date for the series, which will be available only on the CBS streaming service.
