Monopoly releases ‘Lion King’ edition, with musical Pride Rock card holder

With a new live-action remake hitting theaters this summer, “The Lion King” is getting the royal treatment from Hasbro — its own Monopoly edition.

To mark the animated classic’s 25th anniversary, the set will be released April 22.

“We know fans love pop culture integrations with their favorite games and with the 25th anniversary of the original motion picture and the release of the live-action film in July, fans will be clamoring for ways to celebrate the classic movie,” Jen Boswinkel, senior director of global brand strategy and marketing at Hasbro, told Insider.

Hasbro is planning to release a special "Lion King" Monopoly edition on April 22, 2019 — the 25th anniversary of the classic film.

This version puts a few twists to the iconic Monopoly gameplay.

You still buy spaces on the board, but in this game in addition to places — like Elephant Graveyard, Pride Rock, and Tree of Life — you pick up ideas, such as “The Circle of Life,” “Traitor” and “Remember Who You Are.” The concept is that you are following Simba on his journey to become an adult.

The game’s six tokens are golden figures of Mufasa, Scar, Simba, Nala, Timon and Pumbaa.

Instead of houses and hotels, it’s grubs and beetles.

And instead of Community Chest and Chance, players pull one of 32 Destiny cards. Each card highlights a movie scene.

But the neatest part of the game is the Pride Rock that holds the game’s Destiny cards. Pressing a button on the plastic rock plays the opening part of “Circle of Life.”

“Lion King” characters had previously been featured in a previous Monopoly edition — Disney Animation — but have not had a game to themselves, until now.
