As part of an endeavor to help young girls and women see the new female super hero movie Captain Marvel, starring actress Brie Larson, the initiative #CaptainMarvelChallenge has launched on GoFundMe.com.

A Pittsburgh effort, GoFundMe: Pittsburgh#CaptainMarvelChallenge, is one of 25 campaigns to receive a $100 donation, says GoFundMe’s Meghan Scripture.

Pittsburgh resident Larissa Russo, 28, is pursuing the challenge, reserving a theater for 198 girls and young women to see the film on opening (March 8) weekend.

Russo says the screening, which will benefit girls in Pittsburgh schools in grades six through eight, is part of a way to celebrate Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day.

As of Friday afternoon, her site has raised $1,400 of the $5,000 goal to pay for 198 movie tickets, popcorn/drink combos and school bus transportation.

Russo also says she is planning a pre-screening event, “The Captain Marvel Challenge: Heroes in Real Life,” featuring a panel of unnamed “successful and inspiring” Pittsburgh women.
