'Crown,' 'Mandalorian' top Emmy nominations with 24 each

LOS ANGELES — “The Crown” tied with “The Mandalorian” for the most Emmy nominations Tuesday with 24 apiece, but the Marvel universe also got bragging rights with runner-up “WandaVision.”

Emmy nominees with local ties include Pittsburgh native Billy Porter (lead actor in a drama) for “Pose,” which also received nominations for best drama series and a best actress nod for star Mj Rodriguez, who became the first trans woman nominated in a lead acting category. Porter, a 1987 graduate of Pittsburgh CAPA and Taylor Allderdice High Schools and a 1991 graduate of Carnegie Mellon University’s drama program, has been nominated each season of “Pose.” He won the award in 2019.

Partially Pittsburgh-set “This is Us” was nominated for best drama series with star Sterling K. Brown nominated for lead actor in a drama and Chris Sullivan received a support actor in a drama nomination.

“The Mandalorian,” executive produced by Mt. Lebanon native Dave Filoni was nominated in the best drama series category and nabbed a support actor nomination for Giancarlo Esposito.

CMU grad Leslie Odom Jr. was nominated as lead actor in a limited series, movie or anthology for “Hamilton” alongside star Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Mt Lebanon native Mark Cuban was nominated for outstanding host for a reality program for ABC’s “Shark Tank,” which also received a nomination for outstanding structured reality program

The nominations reinforced the rapid rise of streaming, with the top-nominated scripted shows on services that largely emerged in the past two years. In the top three categories — drama, comedy and limited series — only the NBC show “This Is Us” snagged a nomination.

“These nominations represent the work done in television through the most challenging year I can think of,” TV academy chief executive Frank Scherma said before the first nominees were announced. “While many of us in our medium worked remotely throughout the past 18 months, I have to say it feels so good to be getting back on a set. Making great television is a collaborative group effort where the sum equals more than the parts, and I can’t tell you how much I’ve missed it.”

For Netflix, which led the way for the rise of streaming services but has yet to claim a top series trophy, “The Crown” may represent its best bet. It’s been nominated three times before.

The Sept. 10 ceremony, which last year was held virtually because of the covid-19 pandemic, will air live on CBS from a theater and include a limited in-person audience of nominees and guests. Cedric the Entertainer is the host.
