He’s back!

For the first time ever, Adam Sandler will return to his old stomping grounds at NBC’s Studio 4H in New York to host “Saturday Night Live” on May 4.

The week’s musical guest will be Shawn Mendes.

The gig was announced through “Saturday Night Live’s” social media channels.

It’s a bit of surprise, seeing as Sandler has previously said he would never come back to host.

Entertainment Weekly reported in 2014 that Sandler, during an appearance on Norm McDonald’s video podcast, said, “Why should I? There are guys who love doing it, who are great at doing it. I just don’t know how good I’d be doing it. I did what I could do on that show.”

“We are happy to welcome Adam back to ‘SNL’ in what is sure to be a special night,” executive producer Lorne Michaels told Entertainment Weekly.

Back in 1995, Sandler was fired — along with his friend Chris Farley — from the comedy show. At the time, Sandler told Vanity Fair, “Yes, we were [fired]. We kind of quit at the same time as being fired. It was the end of the run for us. The fact that me and him got fired? Who knows. We were on it for a few years, had our run, and everything happens for a reason. We kind of understood because we did our thing. It hurt a lot at the time because we were young and didn’t know where we were going, but it all worked out.”

Sandler has made a few cameo appearances on the show since, and appeared in an SNL Short with Andy Samberg for the 40th Anniversary Special in 2015.

Social media reaction to the announcement was rather positive.
