In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2020, the pop star wrote that “it’s been a rough couple years but (I’m) getting the right treatment that will help treat this so far incurable disease and I will be back and better than ever.” Lyme disease is transmitted by Ixodes ticks, also known as deer ticks. Grammy-winning pop star Justin Bieber says he is in the midst of a bout with Lyme disease.

In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Bieber attempted to clarify rumors.

“While a lot of people kept saying justin Bieber looks like (excrement), on meth etc. they failed to realize I’ve been recently diagnosed with Lyme disease not only that but had a serious case of chronic mono which affected my, skin, brain function, energy, and overall health,” he wrote.

The news comes off the heels of last week’s release of “Yummy,” Bieber’s first solo single in four years.

The video had 31 million views on Wednesday night, following its Jan. 4 premiere.

Bieber added, “it’s been a rough couple years but (I’m) getting the right treatment that will help treat this so far incurable disease and I will be back and better than ever.”

The heartthrob said he will discuss his bout with the illness on an upcoming YouTube docu-series, “Justin Bieber: Seasons.” The 10-episode show is slated to debut Jan. 27. The series shadows Bieber as he constructs his new album and gives insight on his personal life.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, roughly 300,000 Americans are diagnosed with Lyme disease each year.

Despite Bieber saying it’s incurable, the vast majority Lyme disease cases are treated successfully with antibiotics.

Lyme disease is transmitted by deer ticks. Lyme can cause flu-like conditions, neurological problems, joint pain and other symptoms, according to the CDC.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
