A police pursuit of a vehicle stolen in Butler County continued down Route 8 and ended with a crash in Shaler on Wednesday, according to authorities.

Shaler officers were alerted to the crash off Eighth Avenue, near Route 8, shortly before 1 p.m., Shaler police Chief Sean Frank said. Officers from Hampton had been pursuing the vehicle, he said.

The SUV landed upside down in water that Frank described as runoff to a creek after the man driving it reached the dead-end of Eighth Avenue and went over an embankment.

The driver was taken by ambulance to Allegheny General Hospital, Frank said.

The SUV had been stolen from the city of Butler. Police there were not immediately able to comment.

Before the pursuit with Hampton, a Northern Regional officer had come across the stolen vehicle and followed it for a short time, Northern Regional police Chief Bryan DeWick said.

When his officer tried to initiate a traffic stop, DeWick said the man took off, turning from Route 8 onto East Ewalt Road and then onto Peach Drive, which ends in a cul-de-sac.

The man continued to flee through yards, but the Northern Regional officer did not follow, DeWick said.

The man made his way back to Route 8, where Hampton began pursuit into Shaler, DeWick said.

Frank and DeWick said they do not anticipate their departments filing any charges against the man. Butler police will be handling the case, Frank said.
