Mailers soliciting money for the Aspinwall Police Department are a scam and should be thrown away, according to borough officials.

Council President Jeff Harris said residents, including his family, recently received letters asking for money for police.

There is also a mailer that reads, “Aspinwall City Council Members need to hear from you!”

Aspinwall is a borough.

Officials posted the mailers on the borough’s Facebook page alerting people to the scam.

One mailer asks recipients to return the top portion of the letter with a suggested $15 “voluntary donation” and to “keep bottom copy (yellow) for your records.”

The letters are allegedly from Stafford, Texas, according to the address listed at the bottom of the mailers. Council discussed the scam at its March 12 meeting.

Harris reminded residents their police department is funded through tax dollars.

“There’s no need to solicit funds through the mail for our local police department,” Harris said. “There were also typos in the letter.”

Harris said he is unsure what legal action borough police could take in response to the letters, and he again encouraged residents to trash the letters immediately.
