The use of new cameras and license plate readers in Fox Chapel may have led to theft suspects being identified in Greensburg.

Police Chief Michael Stevens said officers received a report of packages being stolen from a home along North Drive on Feb. 13.

Borough cameras caught images and a license plate of the suspect’s car fleeing the area.

Police were able to enter the suspect’s vehicle information into a network used by multiple police departments to help address traffic issues and track down suspect vehicles.

Cameras and license plate readers were recently installed in Fox Chapel and surrounding neighborhoods as part of an initiative through the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office.

A vehicle with the same plate was reportedly spotted on a traffic camera with a similar system in Greensburg.

“Without those cameras, it would have been pretty tough to put it all together. Those cameras are very, very big for our communities.”

Greensburg police Feb. 19 confirmed they were working with Fox Chapel and state police as part of the investigation.

Details about the vehicle and possible suspects were not released as of press time.

Anyone with information about the thefts can contact Fox Chapel police at 412-963-7220.
