President Donald Trump has appointed Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro to a bipartisan council that works with federal officials on issues related to the National Guard, national security, and disaster preparedness and response.
Shapiro, a Democrat from Montgomery County, joins four other Democratic governors and five Republican governors on the Council of Governors, which formed in 2010. Shapiro is the first Pennsylvania governor to serve on the council.
Other governors named to the council Wednesday included Democrats Josh Stein of North Carolina (co-chair), Kathy Hochul of New York, Wes Moore of Maryland and Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan and Republicans Glenn Youngkin of Virginia (co-chair), Ron DeSantis of Florida, Brian Kemp of Georgia, Jeff Landry of Louisiana and Henry McMaster of South Carolina.
All are first-time appointees except for Whitmer, who was appointed to her third two-year term on the council.
