Penn Hills house fire displaces family

A family was left without a home over the weekend after a fire Sunday morning in Penn Hills.

According to a Facebook post from the Penn Hills Volunteer Fire Department, multiple crews were called to a home on the 1100 block of Jodie Lane just before 2:30 a.m.

The interior of the home quickly deteriorated, the post said. Crews had the flames out in about an hour.

There were no injuries reported to the residents.

Firefighters rescued several pets from the building and returned them to their owners.


Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium donation day

Starting at 9 a.m. Monday morning, the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium will kick off its annual donation day in collaboration with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

Until 3 p.m., visitors are able to get free admission to the zoo and aquarium when they bring in non-perishable items, such as canned goods and dry goods. Donations will be accepted in the parking lot.

Items listed as “most needed” by the food bank include:

Canned fruits packed in 100% juice, low sodium or no salt added canned vegetables, low sodium or no salt added canned beans and soup, canned tuna or chicken packed in water, whole-grain cereal, oats, and pasta, peanut butter, paper products, household items, hygiene items, items for infants and children and items for seniors.

According to an announcement released by the zoo, items must be non-perishable, shelf stable and not past their expiration dates. Glass items will not be accepted.
