A vacant lot along Baldwin Street in Bridgeville soon will be repurposed into a butterfly-pollinator garden.
Council on Nov. 11 authorized repurposing the lot, which is behind the Beer Warehouse, next spring.
The borough’s planning commission recommended the lot be used for a butterfly pollinator garden, according to Manager Joe Kauer.
According to borough documents, Bridgeville acquired the vacant lot through the FEMA Flood Buyout Program for passive open space and gardens. Over the past couple of months, the Planning Commission discussed a concept to transform the lot into a garden.
Planting costs are estimated at $904.
It’s anticipated that the public works department could prepare the site, install a fence and add topsoil, according to borough documents. Borough officials would then organize a volunteer planting day in the spring, like last year’s tree planting at another lot in the 600 block of Baldwin Street.

Council also took the following actions at its meeting Nov. 11:
• Authorized applying for a community development block grant to upgrade water drinking fountains at Triangle and Cook School parks.
• Accepted the $99,000 bid from Independent Enterprises, Inc., for the Bluff Street Extension Slope Stabilization and Retaining Wall improvements project. The Pittsburgh-based company was the lowest responsible bid. Borough officials said the project is needed after a small landslide occurred on a portion of the street, affecting a home.
• Accepted a $200,010 bid from Avelli Construction for the Gregg Avenue stairs project. The Ambridge-based company was the lowest responsible bid.
• Advanced a sculpture loan agreement between the borough and Seward Johnson Atelier, Inc. for the lease of outdoor sculptures to be part of the 2025-26 Public Art Bridgeville exhibition.
• Authorized Council President Joseph Verduci to execute permit compliance agreements with the Army Corps of Engineers for the construction of phase 1A of the McLaughlin Run Flood Control Project.
