KENT, Ohio — Jeff Hoenstine threw for one touchdown and ran for another, leading NCAA Division I FCS member St. Francis (Pa.) to a 23-17 victory over Kent State on Saturday.

Hoenstine’s short touchdown run gave the Red Flash a 10-0 lead in the first quarter and they stretched it to 17-0 when Hoenstine hit Gavin Thomson for a 64-yard score early in the second quarter.

It was the Red Flash’s first win over a Division I FBS opponent.

Kent State (0-2) got touchdown passes from starting quarterback Devin Kargman and backup QB Tommy Ulatowski to get within 20-14 at halftime, but the Golden Flashes didn’t score again until Andrew Glass’s 44-yard field goal with 98 seconds left in the game.

St. Francis (1-1) recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock.

Hoenstine completed 11 of 22 passes for 195 yards. He, DeMarcus McElroy and Markell Holman were the only ball carriers for the Red Flash, who totaled 207 yards rushing on 47 carries. McElroy led with 81 yards, Holman had 76 and Hoenstine added 50.

Thomson had five catches for 124 yards.

Kargman went 22-of-38 passing for 193 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Ulatowski completed his only pass for a 9-yard touchdown to Chrishon McCray.

Mac Plummer kicked three field goals for St. Francis.
