The Pittsburgh Penguins lost rookie forward Matthew Phillips through waivers Tuesday after he was reclaimed by his previous team, the Washington Capitals.

Phillips was claimed by the Penguins via waivers from the Capitals on Feb. 16. Appearing in three games with the Penguins, Phillips had no points while averaging 11:20 of ice time per contest. The 25-year-old had been a healthy scratch for the past five games.

A right-handed shot, Phillips (5-foot-8, 160 pounds) has played in 30 games this season between the Penguins and Capitals and has registered five points (one goal, four assists) while clocking an average of 10:23 of ice time per contest.

Phillips is signed to a one-year contract worth $750,000 and is scheduled to become a restricted free agent this upcoming offseason. He is also eligible for arbitration.

After reclaiming him, the Capitals assigned Phillips to Hershey of the American Hockey League.

With Phillips’ departure, the Penguins now have 47 NHL contracts, three short of the NHL limit of 50 per Cap Friendly.
