North Allegheny came in one-two in the 32nd Western Pennsylvania Science Bowl middle school competition on March 4.

North Allegheny’s Marshall Middle School Team 1, consisting of Kavin Puri, Aaron Liu, Suraj Raina, Lucas Liu and Hongyi Wang captured first place.

Taking second place was North Allegheny’s Ingomar Middle School Team 1 — Sanjeev Arora, Alex Du, Benjamin Du, Kaartic Muralidharan and Eric Peng.

Twenty-five teams competed in the event, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Energy Technology Laboratory.

Teams did not play head-to-head matches but competed against all other teams in a virtual competition. Regional competitions had at least three preliminary rounds in which each individual team was read the same sets of questions. The teams with the highest combined point totals from all preliminary rounds advanced to the elimination tournament.

Marshall Middle School Team 1 and North Allegheny Senior High School Team 1, the winner of the Western Pennsylvania Science Bowl’s high school contest, which was held Feb. 25, are now eligible to compete at the 2023 National Science Bowl, which will be held April 27- May 1 in Washington, D.C.

The Science Bowl “aims to inspire the next generation of scientists, researchers and engineers to solve the challenges we face in energy and other fields,” said Brian Anderson, director of the National Energy Technology Laboratory. “NETL is proud to provide a forum that showcases this region’s talented students.”
