North Allegheny Senior High School Team 1 claimed victory at the 2023 Western Pennsylvania Science Bowl Regional High School Competition on Feb. 25.
Team 1 is now eligible to advance to the 2023 National Science Bowl set for April 27-May 1 in Washington, D.C.
Team 1 members are: seniors Anshul Shah, of Franklin Park; Pradyun Solai, of McCandless and William Sun of Marshall and juniors Thrisha Kalpatthi and Gautam Ramkumar, both of Marshall Township.
NASH’s Team 2 took second place and North Allegheny Intermediate High School Team 2 took fourth place.
NASH Team 2 members are: seniors Adi Shankara Mallik, of Marshall and Grace Wang of McCandless; and juniors Max Fang of Marshall and Jason Ma and Edward Mei, both of Franklin Park.
Members of NAI’s Team 2 are: Andrew Feng, Jason Liu, Sritej Padmanabhan, James Xiao and Leo Yu, all freshmen.
Forty-one teams from 26 high schools participated in the Science Bowl, which was conducted in a virtual format and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and National Energy Technology Laboratory.
The Science Bowl tested students’ knowledge of math and science.
Teams did not play head-to-head matches but instead competed against all other teams. Each regional competition had at least three preliminary rounds in which each individual team was read the same sets of questions. The teams with the highest combined point totals from all preliminary rounds advanced to the Elimination Tournament.
“Congratulations to our high school winner of this outstanding academic challenge. Your hard work prepared you to excel against a tremendous field filled with talented students,” said NETL Director Brian Anderson. “I hope this exciting competition inspires you and all teams to pursue your dreams and make groundbreaking discoveries as our next generation of scientists and engineers.”
Franklin Regional High School Team 1 came in third place.
The high schools competing in the Science Bowl were Baldwin, Bethel Park, Central Catholic, Elizabeth Forward, Fox Chapel, Franklin Regional, Hempfield, Keystone Oaks, Mapletown, Mars, Moon, Mt. Lebanon, North Allegheny Senior, North Allegheny Intermediate, North Hills, Norwin, Peters, Pine Richland, Plum, Ringgold, Sewickley Academy, Shady Side Academy, South Fayette, Thomas Jefferson, Upper Saint Clair and Woodland Hills.
