Hampton and McCandless townships will receive a combined $626,483 for traffic safety improvements, state Rep. Arvind Venkat, D-McCandless, announced on Jan. 4.
The grants are funded by PennDOT’s Automated Red-Light Enforcement program, or ARLE.
McCandless will receive $451,483 to upgrade accessible pedestrian signals, equipment for flashing yellow arrow operations, controller replacements and rewiring of existing signal equipment. The updates will be made at 21 locations throughout the township, according to Gov. Tom Wolf.
Hampton will receive $175,000 to replace an out-of-date guiderail on South Pioneer Road.
“Safety should always be the highest priority for every community,” Venkat said. “These grants will help provide safety to the roadway and overall transportation in these townships, something every community should be able to expect.”
The ARLE program aims to improve safety at signalized intersections by providing automated enforcement at locations where data shows red-light running has been an issue.
“This program helps communities across the state make important investments in traffic flow and safety,” Wolf said. “These improvements complement the many road, bridge and multimodal projects happening in Pennsylvania.”
