After spending the past two weeks learning remotely, students at Pittsburgh’s Oliver Citywide Academy were scheduled to be back for in-person classes Monday.
Students were sent home Sept. 29 after school officials said an attack on a teacher was carried out by a 15-year-old student in an empty classroom.
Pittsburgh Public Schools officials said they used the past two weeks to put upgraded safety measures in place, including more security guards, two-way radios in every classroom, a revised enrollment process and separate entrances.
Located in Pittsburgh’s Marshall-Shadeland neighborhood, Oliver Citywide Academy is a special education school that serves students in grades 3-12.
Returning students can expect augmented counseling and other student support services, the school has said. An enhanced adult partnering system for staffers and therapeutic crisis intervention training for new staff members also will be provided.
The student has been charged with multiple felonies including rape, and is currently in a juvenile detention center.
