Dwayne Haskins was legally intoxicated when he was struck and killed by a dump truck last month while walking along a south Florida interstate, according to a medical examiner’s report obtained Monday by the Miami Herald.

Haskins, the 24-year-old Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, was walking along the interstate in search of gas after his rental car had become disabled. His death was ruled an accident, according to the autopsy report.

The toxicology report revealed that Haskins tested positive for alcohol, registering .20 on one test and .24 on another. The legal limit in Florida is .08. The toxicology report showed that Haskins also tested positive for ketamine and norketamine.

Ketamine can be used as an anesthetic or recreationally. Norketamine is a derivative that can be used to treat pain.

Haskins was in south Florida with several of his teammates on offense working out with new quarterback Mitch Trubisky, who has a residence there. The medical examiner’s report stated that Haskins had been out at a club drinking prior to his death.

The report also said Haskins was “reportedly witnessed waving cars down on the shoulder” of the interstate before he was struck by the dump truck. Investigators found his car on the side of the road with a woman inside, according to the medical examiner’s report, which did not know Haskins’ relationship with the female.

The medical examiner’s report also cited a Steelers team official saying Haskins had gone to dinner with a friend or cousin after training with his teammates. Haskins then went to a club and “they drank heavily and at some point, they got into a fight, separating,” according to the report.

Haskins had just completed his first season with the Steelers, spending all but one game on the inactives list as a third quarterback. He was expected to compete for the starting job this year.

A public viewing and memorial service was held April 22 at the Allegheny Center Alliance Church on the North Side.
