Greensburg police — usually accustomed to capturing criminals — were called to free an unusual suspect this week: a six-point buck.
Lt. Donald Cole and Officers Adam Gogets and Frank Tempo freed the deer after it became stuck in a goal net on a soccer field at Greensburg Salem High School early Thursday.
“They went above and beyond their duty” to safely free the buck, Capt. Shawn Denning said.
Tempo wrestled the frightened deer, which had its legs and antlers tangled in the net.
A morning jogger, David Kahley of Greensburg, said he saw the animal struggling and called police about 6:15 a.m.
Cole used a long pole with a loop, used to secure dogs, to try to keep the deer still as the officers tried to subdue it.
A video shows the buck fighting Tempo as he was attempting to free it from its predicament. All three officers ended up wrangling the deer.
“No one was hurt, and the deer got up and ran away,” Denning said.
A crowd that gathered to watch the officers free the animal offered a round of applause as it scampered off, Kahley said.
