A Gilpin man was taken to a local hospital for treatment after a tree fell on his porch Friday.

Neighbors Lori and Brian Barbieri said they heard a snap as the late-afternoon storms died down and watched as the tree came down across their neighbor’s home in the Kiski River Campsites along Kiski Camp Drive in the township’s Schenley neighborhood.

“We came running over here to see what was going on and to see if they were alive and whatnot,” Brian Barbieri said. “I haven’t run in 10 years. I come jetting across here just to make sure things were OK. … They sit right on the porch and they were OK. There’s a male and female that live here.

“They took him to a hospital with a little bit of wounds. His wife was OK. They were just both (shaken) up by the whole ordeal. He was taken by ambulance.”

Gilpin police said the call for the tree crash came in around 5:15 p.m.

Lower Kiski Emergency Services transported the man, who suffered minor injuries. His wife was treated at the scene.

Police said the tree was rotted and likely fell due to the storm.

A neighboring camper sustained minor damage from some of the tree limbs falling on it.

The couple is believed to be in their 70s and have lived on the campgrounds for about 30 years.

Other neighbors also came over, some with chainsaws, to help cut up the tree and clear the debris.

“We help each other out,” Barbieri said. “That’s what we do every weekend here. If something happens, it’s like a pit crew. We all come together and help each other out.”
