A Derry Township man died Thursday after being found unresponsive in his cell in the Washington County jail, authorities said.

The death of Gregory S. Roddy, 53, of New Derry, is being investigated as a suicide, Coroner Timothy Warco reported. A determination on the cause and manner of death is pending.

A jail guard found Roddy around 1:30 p.m. He was transported to Washington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead in the emergency department at 2:30 p.m., the coroner said.

Washington City police are assisting in the investigation, the coroner said.

Roddy was being held on $100,000 bond on charges of strangulation, simple assault and harassment. Cecil Township police arrested him May 7 on accusations that he had assaulted a woman in a hotel.

Roddy was scheduled for a preliminary Thursday before Senior District Judge Larry Hopkins.
